Every year, a new generation of students arrives in Manchester, full of ambition and ready to make their mark on the world. But for many, getting here wasn’t easy.
Right now, rising wealth inequality threatens to put university further out of reach for those with the odds already stacked against them.
Some students will be the first in their family to go into higher education. Others will have faced difficult personal circumstances or grown up in low-income households.
By making a gift today, you’ll give students the helping hand they need to get here – and to thrive once they do.
Will grew up in a low-income household and dreamed of becoming an accountant. But being the first in his family to go to university, the path ahead was uncertain.
When his offer came, Will’s family was thrilled – but worried about how he’d manage financially. Fortunately, thanks to a donor-funded scholarship, he didn’t have to put his dream on hold. The financial support he received meant he could accept his place at Manchester and make the most of his time here.
And he hasn’t looked back since.
Will is now on track for a first-class degree in Management (Accounting and Finance), and has already secured a graduate job as an Audit Associate.
Thanks to donor support, he had the helping hand he needed to apply for internships, cover travel costs, and arrive for interviews feeling confident and prepared.
“My scholarship made everything possible. I’ve had opportunities I never thought I’d be able to take – and I’m so excited for what comes next.” Will, BSc Management (Accounting and Finance), Year 4
Too many bright young people grow up believing that university isn’t for them. They may be the first in their family. They may not see how they’ll ever afford it. Or they may worry they won’t fit in.
But your support today will change that.
By donating today, you’ll give a talented person from a disadvantaged background the helping hand they need to accept their place at Manchester – and to make the most of their time once they’re here.
In the coming months, many students are weighing up whether they can afford to go to university at all. Your support could be the reason they say yes – and arrive ready to thrive, not just survive.
So please, if you can, give a talented person from a disadvantaged background the helping hand they need by donating before 31 July.
Thank you.
